Privacy Policy

Calmli Music LLP ("Calmli", "we", "us") teaches music one to one through the Calmli app for iPhone, iPad and Android and through calmli.in. The app is for our own students and their parents or guardians, for teachers who run their own schools in it and the families they invite (section 8), and for learners who practise on their own with Calmli Studio. This policy explains what personal data we collect, how we use it and the choices you have.

1. Information we collect

Information you or the school provide

Account details: name, email address, phone number and sign-in details. If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive the identifier and details they share with us.
Enrolment details: the student's city and country, which set the time zone of classes and the currency of fees.
Learning records: courses, class schedule and attendance, homework, practice time, exercise results and notes from your teacher.
Payment records: fees, amounts, dates and payment references. Card, UPI and bank details are entered directly with our payment provider, Razorpay, and never reach us.
Sign-up answers: when you create an account in the app, we keep each answer you send as you go, such as whether a teacher invited you, what you'd like to learn, your city and your phone number, even if you stop before the end, and may call or message you to help you finish. Nothing you haven't sent is kept, and nothing is kept from a student under 18 who signs up on their own.
Subscriptions: Calmli Studio, for learners without a teacher, and Teach on Calmli plans can be bought in the app. Apple or Google takes the payment. We receive only whether the subscription is active, its plan, its dates and the store's reference for it, never card or bank details. A learner's practice stays on their phone.

Information collected automatically

In the app: when the app was last opened, the type of device, and its system and app versions.
On our website: your approximate country, worked out from your IP address to show prices in your currency; server logs; and, with your consent, cookies (section 6).

Microphone

The app uses the microphone only when you start the tuner, play along on your own piano or sing in the Vocal Studio, and only with your permission. Sound is analysed on your device. Vocal Studio recordings stay on your device and are deleted after 30 days. For singing exercises your teacher assigns, only the pitch results are shared with your teacher. Guide recordings a teacher makes are stored with the school's exercises and played to students who choose to hear them.

2. How we use information

To teach: scheduling, attendance, homework, progress and feedback.
To bill fees, take payments and send receipts.
To keep your account secure, including sign-in and verification.
To support you, for example by knowing which app version you have.
To open Calmli Studio for learners whose subscription or free days are running.
On our website, to answer trial requests, review applications to teach on Calmli (section 8) and, with your consent, measure our advertising.

We do not sell personal data. The app shows no advertising and contains no third-party analytics or advertising software.

3. How we share information

We share personal data only with service providers that process it for us under contract:

cloud hosting, sign-in and SMS verification;
payments: Razorpay, including Apple Pay, Google Pay, UPI and cards;
Apple and Google, for subscriptions bought in the app;
email delivery;
Sign in with Apple or Google, if you use them;
on our website only: an IP-location service, and Meta and Google for advertising measurement, with your consent.

We may also disclose information where the law requires it. App data is stored in India. Some providers process data in other countries, including the United States, under appropriate safeguards.

4. How long we keep it

Account and profile: until you delete your account.
Learning records: while you are enrolled and for as long as the school needs them afterwards, unless you ask us to erase them.
Payment records: as long as tax and accounting law requires, currently eight years in India.
App use: only the latest record for each type of device, deleted with your account.
Trial requests: deleted within 12 months.
Applications to teach: as section 8 describes.
Records in a teacher's school: one year after you leave or the school closes, then deleted.

5. Your rights and choices

Access or correct your data by asking the school or emailing hello@calmli.in.
Delete your account in the app: account button → Account & privacy → Delete my account.
Erase your records by emailing us. We erase everything except what the law requires us to keep, and confirm within 30 days.
Withdraw consent to the microphone in your device's settings, or to marketing cookies with Cookie settings at the foot of every page.

Depending on where you live, you may have further rights, such as to object to or restrict processing or to data portability, and to complain to a data protection authority, including the Data Protection Board of India. In India you may also nominate someone to exercise your rights.

6. Cookies

The app uses no cookies. Our website uses a cookie our host needs to run it and remembers your cookie choice. Marketing cookies from Meta and Google are used only if you accept them. Until you do, nothing is sent to Meta, and Google receives only cookieless signals that a page was visited. You can change your choice at any time with Cookie settings.

7. Children

Many of our students are under 18. A parent or guardian enrols the student and consents on their behalf. In a teacher's school, the parent is invited, joins first and agrees before the child does. We collect only what we need to teach, and never use a child's data for advertising, profiling or tracking. Parents may access, correct or erase their child's data at any time.

8. Teach on Calmli

Some teachers run their own schools in the Calmli app. They apply on calmli.in/teach.

What we collect: the answers sent: name, email address, phone number, city and country, what they teach, years of teaching, how many students they teach and, if added, a few words and a link, with the version of the Teacher Terms accepted.
Why: to review the application and contact the teacher about it. The phone number is the one they confirm in the app to open their school.
Where it goes: straight to Calmli's own servers in India; this website's server never receives it. The page stores nothing typed, and no advertising or analytics script runs on calmli.in/teach, whatever the cookie choice.
Emails: our email-delivery provider receives the address and what our emails say: the name, city, what they teach, the phone number's last four digits and our decision.
Spam protection: applications are counted per email address and per network with codes that can't be turned back into either. The counts are deleted within two days.
How long: an application never confirmed is deleted after 48 hours, and a declined one 30 days after the decision. An approved one becomes the teacher's record on Calmli.

To invite a student, the teacher gives us the student's name and a mobile number: the parent's for anyone under 18. We use that number only to match the invite when its owner confirms it by SMS in the app. An invite lasts 30 days. In the school we keep each student's name, their instrument if the teacher adds it, whether they are under 18, the notes the teacher sends and whether they were marked done, and when a parent agreed. The teacher decides whom they teach and what they send; we run the app for them, and our staff look at a school's records only to answer a report.

Some teachers ask Calmli to collect their class fees. Then Calmli sells the class: Razorpay sends us the payment's details and the email address the payer gave it, we email a receipt from Calmli Music LLP, with GST where it applies, and we pay the teacher their share.

9. Security

Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Each family's records are available only to that family and their school or teacher. Card and bank details are handled only by our payment provider's PCI-DSS certified systems.

10. Changes

We will update the date above when this policy changes, and tell you in the app or by email before any significant change takes effect.

11. Contact and Grievance Officer
