Syllabus roadmaps are tailored and paced to each individual student. Core foundational competencies include:
- Module 1: Song Architecture & Core Central Idea (Sessions 1–6): Finding the title, the thesis statement, and standard song forms. Milestone: Draft 3 complete song outlines with distinct verse, chorus, and bridge concepts.
- Module 2: Sensory Imagery & Rhyme Scheme Psychology (Sessions 7–12): Show, don’t tell: sensory language and fresh rhyme structures. Milestone: Write complete lyrics for two full songs utilizing advanced slant rhymes and sensory details.
- Module 3: Melodic Contour & Hook Architecture (Sessions 13–18): Crafting earworm melodies with emotional contrast. Milestone: Compose a hook-heavy chorus melody with harmonic chord progression.
- Module 4: The Bridge, Polishing & First Demo Recording (Sessions 19–24): Writing emotionally impactful bridges and recording acoustic demos. Milestone: Deliver 2 fully completed original songs recorded as acoustic demos for faculty assessment.
Equipment & Practice Commitment
Suggested Practice: 30 to 45 minutes of writing, melodic brainstorming, and journal harvesting (1 weekly 1-on-1 critique session (45–60 mins) + 3 hours self-guided songwriting).
Required Equipment:
- Notebook or digital lyric document (e.g. Google Docs, Notes)
- Smartphone or audio recorder for capturing voice memo ideas on the fly
- Device with camera and mic for weekly 1-on-1 mentoring sessions
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to play an instrument to take the songwriting course?
While knowing basic guitar or piano is helpful, it is not mandatory! Many of history’s greatest songwriters are lyricists or topliners who sing melodies over chord loops. If you do not play an instrument, your mentor will provide instrumental accompaniment and chord arrangements for your melodies.
Can I write songs in languages other than English (e.g. Hindi, Tamil)?
Yes, absolutely. Mentor Kamlesh Purohit guides songwriters writing in English, Hindi, and regional languages. The core mechanics of melody, rhythm, emotional prosody, and structural dynamics apply to all languages.
Who owns the copyright to the songs I write during lessons?
You own 100% of your songs, lyrics, and melodies. Calmli Music and our faculty claim zero copyright or publishing rights to student-created compositions.
How do 1-on-1 songwriting lessons work?
Each week, you bring lyric lines, voice memo melodies, or song concepts. Your mentor reviews them line-by-line, analyzes rhyme patterns, tests melodic intervals, suggests harmonic chord voicings, and helps you refine the song into a finished piece.
