Vocal Training

Breath Control, Pitch Accuracy & Contemporary Performance

Singing is an athletic, neurological, and emotional craft. At Calmli Music, our 1-on-1 vocal training strips away vocal strain, pitch anxiety, and throat constriction. Guided by mentor Kamlesh Purohit (Berklee Vocal Intensive), students master healthy diaphragmatic breath support, smooth vocal registration between chest and head voice, and expressive phrasing across Hindustani classical nuances and Western contemporary styles.

Illustrative Curriculum Structure

Syllabus roadmaps are tailored and paced to each individual student. Core foundational competencies include:

  • Module 1: The Vocal Instrument & Appoggio Breath (Sessions 1–6): Posture, diaphragmatic expansion, and gentle vocal onset. Milestone: Sustain comfortable vocalises for 15+ seconds with relaxed throat and steady airflow.
  • Module 2: Pitch Centering & Tanpura Intonation (Sessions 7–12): Micro-tonal ear training and clean intervals against a drone. Milestone: Sing 8-bar melodic phrases with verified 98%+ pitch accuracy against a continuous drone.
  • Module 3: Vocal Registration: Chest, Head & Mix (Sessions 13–18): Smoothing the passaggio (the break) between low chest and high head voice. Milestone: Smoothly glide through your vocal break on vowel sirens without an audible pitch crack.
  • Module 4: Song Phrasing, Diction & Recital Milestone (Sessions 19–24): Applying vocal technique to complete songs with emotional connection. Milestone: Perform and record a complete 3-minute song with dynamic shading and secure intonation.

Frequently Asked Questions

I think I am "tone deaf". Can I still learn to sing?

True tone-deafness (congenital amusia) affects less than 1.5% of the population. In 99% of cases, struggling to hit notes is simply an untrained coordination between the ear and vocal folds. With systematic Tanpura ear training in the Calmli app and patient 1-on-1 vocalises, our students reliably achieve secure pitch matching within their first 8 to 12 sessions.

Can you teach both Indian Classical (Hindustani) and Western Pop / Contemporary?

Yes! Mentor Kamlesh Purohit bridges both worlds with training from Berklee Vocal Intensive and KM Music Conservatory. You can focus purely on Western contemporary, Indian classical/semi-classical, or a blend of both styles.

How do online vocal lessons work with internet lag (latency)?

You never sing over internet delay! In our 1-on-1 sessions, your mentor plays an exercise or reference note, you listen and sing it back, and your mentor immediately provides feedback on pitch, breath support, and mouth shape. Backing tracks are played on your side to guarantee zero latency.

How long does it take before I notice improvement in my singing?

Most students experience noticeable ease in breathing and reduced throat tension within the first 3 to 4 lessons. Within 12 sessions, students report greater pitch accuracy, expanded range, and newfound confidence when singing in front of others.

What happens if I get a cold or have a sore throat on lesson day?

Never sing through pain or acute vocal inflammation! With 24 hours notice, you can reschedule your class. Alternatively, your mentor can use that session for music theory, listening analysis, lyric interpretation, or breath mechanics without vocal strain.
